NavCIS (tm)
Navigator for CompuServe Information Services
A powerful off-line navigator
designed to make CompuServe
Easier to use
and
Reduce connect-time charges
Dvorak Development
&
Publishing Corporation
NavCIS is a powerful communications utility designed to make accessing and
using CompuServe easier and cheaper. How does it do this? It makes
CompuServe cheaper by allowing the user to perform most work off-line,
that is, while not connected to CompuServe. Because CompuServe charges
you for each minute while you are connected, the less time you are online,
the more money saved. When the user has prepared his or her messages, and
other actions, NavCIS goes on-line, performs the specified tasks automat-
ically, then disconnects. Since no human intervention is required, the
process is completely automated and very, very fast. A typical session
using a product such as CIM or WinCIM lasts anywhere from 10 to 20
minutes. Using NavCIS, the same session takes between 1 and 2 minutes!
NavCIS also makes CompuServe much easier to use. Because it uses a well
designed intuitive graphical interface, and advanced Windows technology,
the average user can set up, configure, and use CompuServe via NavCIS in a
few minutes. Picklists and hot mouse help make choosing options a breeze.
NavCIS is a very robust program. That is, there are many features, and a
lot of power available. Fortunately, this power is packaged in such a way
that it is not intimidating. Quite the contrary, it is easy, and exciting
to use.
A "typical" NavCIS session:
Meet Jane, she's our fictitious NavCIS user. We'll watch as she uses
NavCIS to navigate through the labrynthian world of CompuServe.
Jane is a Windows user, and to start NavCIS she clicks on the icon for it.
As NavCIS loads it display a message telling Jane that it is loading the
databases and checking their data. This ensures that NavCIS's databases
are both ready, and perfectly intact. If something were wrong with the
data, NavCIS would inform Jane and correct it automatically. The entire
data integrity check takes but a few short moments.
The NavCIS main screen appears, and Jane sees here forums here. Each
forum has its own large button. Since this is Jane's first use of
CompuServe today, she presses the New button on the toolbar. NavCIS looks
up the phone number of Jane's nearest CompuServe node and dials it. But
wait, Jane lives in England... so NavCIS dials her local Mercury node
instead. Unfortunately, that node is busy. NavCIS knows the alternate
number to dial, since Jane has previously entered this information.
Once NavCIS successfully connects to CompuServe, it automatically logs
Jane on, and enters her password. Then it checks to see if she has any
waiting e-mail... ahhh, 5 waiting e-mail messages. NavCIS downloads the
5 messages and puts them on Jane's hard disk for safekeeping. Woops, one
of the messages is a file. NavCIS automatically detects the incoming file
and safely stores it in Jane's \NAVCIS\DL directory. Surprisingly, NavCIS
saves the file to the same name by which it was sent... in this case
TO_JANE.DOC. NavCIS is the only navigator that saves filenames to their
native file name. Next, NavCIS uploads two messages that Jane has
written. One of these messages has a receipt request attached. This
means that Jane wants to be informed when the intended recipient reads the
message.
Once finished with e-mail, NavCIS goes to the first forum that Jane uses.
In this case its the MSWRKGRP forum, a forum dedicated to supporting
Windows for Workgroup users. NavCIS automatically downloads the message
headers in the seven sections that Jane is monitoring in the MSWRKGRP
forum. A message header is the title of a message thread. A message
thread is a group of messages which are replies to the first message. Its
sort of like a conversation at a party. One person starts off by telling
a nearby listener that he's got a great dentist, and before you know it,
everyone is talking about dentists.
Once NavCIS downloads the thread titles, it updates her catalogs. Each
forum is has three basic parts: sections, which are used for conversations
(as shown above), libraries which hold hundreds of files, and conference
rooms. For now let's just concentrate on libraries... this is where the
real gold of CompuServe is found.
Each forum can have up to 18 libraries. Each library can have hundreds of
files within. This makes the task of finding a specific file quite
tough... (especially when you realize there are over 800 forums on
CompuServe!)
NavCIS solves this in two ways: first it has the ability to read the
filenames and associated information about files in specific libraries.
After gathering this information, NavCIS organizes it into a list, called
a catalog, which can be reviewed at Jane's leisure, off-line. NavCIS also
has the ability to automatically update theses catalogs at user defined
intervals... Jane has her set to update each 15 days.
NavCIS also has the ability to search CompuServe for specific files. Jane
wants to find some new wallpaper for After Dark (a screen saver program)
she heard about. The wall paper shows bungee jumping cows... and that's
all she knows about it. So she enters, "bungee" and "cows" in the keyword
field of the FileFinder... with her next session, Jane is pleased to find
that there is an AD (After Dark) file in DVORAK, Lib 10 called BUNGEE.AD.
Next, Jane reads her mail, and is reminded about a note she intended to
write. She clicks on the Compose button and the New Message editor
appears. Once done typing, she clicks on the Spell check button to check
her spelling. Woops, almost forgot, she needs to send a copy of the reply
to the software evaluation committee, so she clicks on the CC: button
and then selects "*Eval Group" from the picklist. There, all done. She
clicks on Send and her reply will be sent to NavCIS Support, with a copy
to each of the 5 members listed in Jane's software eval group.
Next, Jane double clicks on the MSWRKGRP forum icon and sees there are
115 message headers to review. Normally, Jane would sigh at having to
read through that many headers, but with NavCIS its a cinch. She scrolls
through the list of headers looking for header titles marked in green with
a pair of glasses on the left hand side. Headers marked in this manner
have keywords which match Jane's list of key words. Out of 115 headers,
Jane sees only seven that have been highlighted for her attention by NavCIS.
She reviews them and decides that three are worth downloading. She
marks each for downloading by clicking on the appropriate header title.
She also writes a quick message to ALL asking if anyone else has heard
about the new comm driver that allows Workgroup users to share a modem.
Lastly, Jane wants a file catalog for libraries 1 and 7. The Outgoing
Actions dialog box below shows what NavCIS will do on its next pass while
in the MSWRKGRP forum.
Now that Jane has everything finished, she needs to get back onto
CompuServe to post her replies, send the message to Tech Support in DVORAK
and download the bungee jumping cow screen saver, send the message to ALL
in MSWRKGRP, get the catalog listings and grab the three message threads.
To start the process, Jane presses the Action button on the toolbar.
NavCIS dials CompuServe, logs on, and posts her replies, downloads the
file, create the catalogs, and grabs the headers. After 1 minute, 18
seconds, NavCIS is done and logs Jane back off.
And that, more or less, is a "typical" session using NavCIS. NavCIS
offers much more than what was covered in Jane's fictional visit. Below
is a feature listing which compares NavCIS SE (the freeware version) to
NavCIS Pro.
Both NavCIS SE (the freeware version) and NavCIS TE (the 30-day demo
version of Pro) are available for you to evaluate in the DVORAK forum,
in Library 1. The file name for the SE version is WNAVSE.EXE and the
TE version is WPROTE.EXE. If you'd rather use the DOS version, replace
the "W" with a "D" in the file names. The SE version need never be
registered or paid for in any way... its freeware.
You can even duplicate it and give copies to friends and colleagues
(provided you don't charge for it).
Comparison of features between NavCIS SE, NavCIS Pro, & NavCIS TE
(the 30-day Timed Edition of Pro): Updated Jan. 1994

About NavCIS TE
NavCIS TE is the Timed Edition of NavCIS Pro. It will run for 30 days
from the first day you go on-line to CompuServe with it. At the end of 30
days, it will cease going on-line, but will not destroy itself or damage
any data files. In a nutshell, it is NavCIS Pro, but will only work for
30 days.
Should you upgrade to NavCIS Pro, all your data collected while using
either the TE or SE versions will be fully assimilated by NavCIS Pro.
